Cycling along the canal routes of Britain reveals a world that often goes unnoticed from the highways and roads that cross the tiny island, a world that not only opens a door to an industrial age now long since confined to history but one revitalised by an appreciation for the protection of the environment, within a world of narrowboats and waterways. Once again I chose a route along theLeaRivercanal from Hertford toCanaryWharfand Hertford Union canals and invited a friend on a visit fromHungary. Sadly, the day was not to end on a pleasurable note, as we witnessed an act of wanton violence on our return journey.
